Motherland fans appeased after sharing verdict on BBC spin-off Amandaland - Motherland had a loyal following and this spin-off appears to have delighted fans

When Motherland was quietly cancelled after its Christmas special in 2022, a small subsection of people in the UK were very, very angry. Strongly worded tweets were sent. Mumsnet message boards were filled with incensed comments.

The diva alpha mum has been knocked down a peg or two when we meet her in Amandaland. Fresh from her divorce and with her kids now teenagers, Amanda (Lucy Punch), now broke, has been forced to trade her safety blanket of Waitroses in Chiswick to the life of Tesco Metros in the "up-and-coming" SoHa (that's South Harlesden for the uninitiated).

The spin-off’s focus is in its name: it will centre around the new life of Amanda, the self-obsessed leader of the original sitcom’s “Alpha Mums”. As Motherland neared its end, we saw the facade of Amanda’s seemingly perfect life crumble when her husband filed for divorce and she was forced out of her envy-inducing Acton home.

The comedy is a sequel of sorts to the hit sitcom, which followed busy mum Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin) as she juggled her career while navigating school mum power struggles. It focuses on snobby Amanda (Lucy Punch) - who used to lord it over the other parents - as she starts again in a new postcode after her divorce forced her to downsize.

Fans of the BBC hit comedy Motherland have a brand new sitcom to enjoy with spin-off Amandaland. The new show comes as Motherland creator Holly Walsh previously shared the show would not be returning.
