DALLAS (AP) — A powerful winter storm that dumped heavy snow and glazed roads with ice across much of Texas and Oklahoma lumbered eastward into southern U.S. states overnight, prompting governors to declare states of emergency and shuttering schools across the region.

North Georgia school districts are currently weighing their options for Friday ahead of a winter storm that will move through the area.

Schools and buildings from Texas to Georgia were shut down Thursday or prepared to close ahead of freezing rain and snow forecast for much of the Southern U.S. as another burst of plunging temperatures and winter storms threatened to again snarl travel.

Ahead of Friday’s potential for snow and ice, some districts have started to cancel classes. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for most of north Georgia — including all of metro Atlanta on Jan. 10, 2025.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for four counties in the Midlands, leading at least one school district to cancel after-school activities on Friday.
