Japan's likely next leader says he will call an election for Oct. 27 once he takes office
TOKYO (AP) — Shigeru Ishiba, the head of Japan's governing party, said Monday he plans to call a parliamentary election to be held on Oct. 27 after he is elected as prime minister on Tuesday.

The vote is limited to the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party's parliamentarians and dues-paying members. Because the party's governing coalition dominates parliament, the winner is assured to be Japan’s next prime minister. A record nine lawmakers, including two women, are vying for the job in an unpredictable race.
