Bethesda-based Marriott International plans to lay off hundreds of workers in January. Some 833 employees will be part of a mass layoff that takes effect Jan. 3, the hotel giant said in a notice

Marriott announced that it would lay off more than 800 employees but said that it wouldn’t affect hotel staffing.

Now that Marriott International has doubled in size over a decade, it saw an opportunity to rethink its organization and restructure for efficiency.

Hundreds of employees of Marriott — one of the biggest companies in Montgomery County — are being told they’re going to be checked out of their jobs in just a few weeks. Marriott was required by Maryland law to issue a warning that 833 people will lose their jobs in January of 2025 — just six weeks from now.
