Wisconsin voters decided on a referendum question that addresses the eligibility of non-citizens—who are already barred from voting in federal and state elections—to vote in local elections.

The statewide referendum, approved by voters on Nov. 5,  changes the language in a section of the state constitution to clarify that only U.S. citizens may vote in Wisconsin elections.

Seemingly defying recent polls showing voters’ opposition to property tax increases, Wisconsinites approved a record number of school district referendums totaling $4.4 billion in 2024, according to a report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum.

The Wisconsin Policy Forum study found that school districts asked voters to sign off on a record 241 referendums, eclipsing the old record of 240 set in 1998.
