RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Some North Carolina DMV offices are expanding their hours starting Monday. In all, 42 driver's license offices will open an hour early -- at 7 a.m. -- to increase the number of appointments they can schedule.
Tougher identification laws go into effect soon, but more driver’s license offices will open earlier starting in April.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is expanding its weekday hours at a majority of offices beginning Monday morning.
However, starting May 7, federal agencies will start to require a REAL ID, U.S. passport or another federally-approved identification to board commercial flights and enter federal buildings. This is a part of the REAL ID Act passed by Congress in 2005..

The Real ID Act will be enforced starting on May 7. People are encouraged to get the proper documentation ahead of time.
The REAL ID-compliant cards, enhanced driver’s licenses or other TSA-acceptable forms of identification will be required for anyone over the age of 18 to pass through airport security starting on May 7, the DHS said.

For most people, there’s no need to rush to the DMV offices. Real IDs will continue to be issued after May 7. But it’s fitting that Goodwin will face one last challenge before he exits. He’s ordered more driver’s license offices to open an hour early — at 7 a.m. — to meet the demand.
