Utah skywatchers are in for a celestial treat this Thursday night, March 13, as a total lunar eclipse will be visible across the state. The event, lasting approximately six hours, will provide a stunning view of Earth’s shadow gradually covering the moon before turning it a striking shade of red.

During Thursday night’s total lunar eclipse, the entire moon will fall within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra, making it appear red-orange. This phenomenon is commonly called a “blood moon.” NASA says the best way to see the eclipse is in a dark environment away from bright lights.
