Hearing a lot about Lemon8 lately? You’re not the only one. Amid a looming U.S. ban on TikTok, content creators have been pushing the platform’s sister app.

Xiaohongshu and Lemon8 have jumped to the top of Apple's App Store as TikTok moves closer to being kicked out of the U.S.

Lemon8 is a social media app that is like a cross between Instagram and Pinterest, and is the sister app of TikTok. Both apps were developed by the China-based company ByteDance, who also own the video editing app, CapCut, and the photo/art editing app, Hypic.

Lemon8 is owned by a subsidiary of TikTok owner ByteDance. ByteDance started pushing TikTok users toward the app with sponsored TikTok posts as the TikTok ban looms, and has more than 1 million daily active users, according to Axios.

Some TikTok users aren't waiting until the upcoming Jan. 19 ban to test out other short-form video sharing apps, but instead of Meta's social media sites or the Fediverse, they're swarming to other Chinese-owned mobile software platforms.

Chinese-made social media apps Xiaohongshu and Lemon8 have soared to the top two spots on Apple’s iPhone download charts in the U.S., as users look for alternatives to TikTok ahead of an imminent ban stateside.

As a possible ban on TikTok in the United States looms, several other Chinese-owned social media apps have gained popularity. Newsweek reached out to TikTok via its website for comment. TikTok will appear before the Supreme Court on Friday in a final attempt to prevent a national ban on the app.

As the U.S. edges closer to a potential ban on TikTok, American internet users are increasingly turning to Chinese social media applications Xiaohongshu and Lemon8.
