Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headed for a surprise election victory in Haryana state on Tuesday, reinforcing its popularity in the northern heartland a few months after stumbling in national elections.

As of 6:54 pm, the Indian National Congress has secured 36 seats and is leading on one. The BJP has won 48 seats. The INLD+ has won two seats, and Independents have won three. The JJP and AAP failed to open their accounts.

Consolidation of non-Jat votes: BJP was able to consolidate non-Jat vote bank. Jat community is dominant in Haryana and Congress was betting on relying on its support. It did get it. But it is also apparent that BJP was able to consolidate and bag non-Jat votes. Congress fielded 28 Jat candidates compared to BJP's 16.
