Dozens of schools were closed and road and train travel ground to a halt as a cold snap brought snow, ice and sleet across parts of the UK.

Snowy conditions described as “the first taste of winter” have caused school closures, train cancellations and road delays in parts of the UK after severe weather warnings were issued.

The forecaster has issued several yellow weather warnings for snow and ice for parts of the UK between 4pm on Sunday and 10am Tuesday morning. Throughout the warning periods, there is a chance of power cuts, disruption to road and public transport and the risk of injury from slipping on ice, the weather service added.

Snow has fallen across parts of the UK with forecasters saying there is a risk of ice as temperatures drop overnight.

We mentioned earlier that major road accidents have been reported in Scotland. The RAC has this advice for driving in snow and ice: Drivers should ensure their tyres have plenty of tread and are inflated to the correct pressure to give them the best possible grip on the road.

The UK has been hit with travel chaos and school closures with up to 15cm of snow expected to fall in some parts of the country. Motorists are facing disruption and train services have been cancelled as the Met Office issued three yellow weather alerts for snow and ice covering much of northern England.

One school in Bradford has been closed and several are due to start later because of the overnight snow. The Bradford council school closure page has been updated this morning with one school shut so far and four schools opening later to allow more time for pupils and teachers to travel.
