Hands on with Meta's Orion glasses
Meta Orion AR glasses — everything you need to know
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Orion glasses are the lenses, which are not made from glass or plastic. Instead, Meta is using a silicon carbide where tiny projections are beamed onto the lenses. This material is supposed to be more durable, lighter and features an ultrahigh index for refraction of the on-board projectors.
I tried out Meta's Orion AR glasses. I'd buy them in a heartbeat — if they were actually for sale.
Big Tech has spent years trying to make smart glasses. Meta's AR glasses, called Orion, are impressive. But they aren't yet for sale.
I Wore Meta's Orion AR Glasses: A Wireless Taste of a Neural Future
Orion has a 70-degree field of view, which may sound pretty small to any VR headset wearer. VR devices tend to have a field of view around 90 degrees or greater. Most other AR headsets have even smaller viewing areas for their pop-up AR displays. Snap's new Spectacles, for instance, have a much smaller (and narrower) 46-degree FOV.
Meta’s game-changing Orion AR glasses could launch sooner than we thought, but they might cost as much as a smartphone
Instead Meta seems to be aiming at being affordable in terms of phones and laptops – which to me would be somewhere around $700 (around £700 / AU$1,350). Admittedly, this makes a lot of sense – $299 / £299 / AU$449 would be a surprisingly low price for smart specs that are being billed as an eventual smartphone replacement.
