President Donald Trump on Friday reversed his decision to eliminate the “de minimis” loophole that allowed packages from China valued at under $800 to be processed without customs duties or tariffs, a component of the 10% tariff on Chinese imports that took effect Tuesday—a move that threatened discount Chinese retailers Temu and Shein.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday delaying the elimination of the de minimis trade exemption, a nearly century-old provision that has allowed Chinese e-commerce giants such as Shein and Temu to ship low-cost goods to the U.

The import threshold exemption cited most often as a loophole for allowing e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries to enter the U.S. marketplace without scrutiny no longer will apply to those products valued at under $800 coming from China and Canada beginning Tuesday.
