N UUK, Greenland — Greenland’s likely new prime minister on Wednesday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s effort to take control of the island, saying Greenlanders must be allowed to decide their own future as it moves toward independence from Denmark.

The New York Times said the party was likely to enter a coalition with Inuit Ataqatigiit, a moderate party that came in third in this week’s election with 21.4% of the vote. Its leader is the current prime minister, Múte Egede, who has also dismissed joining the United States.

Greenland’s pro-business opposition party won the Arctic island’s closely-watched parliamentary election on Tuesday, following a race dominated both by US President Donald Trump’s annexation threat and growing calls from residents for independence from Denmark.
