Google is ringing in the Year of the Snake in South Korea and beyond with a Lunar New Year-themed Google Doodle.

Communities across the world begin celebrating Lunar New Year on Jan. 29 — and 2025 marks the Year of the Snake.

With Lunar New Year falling on Wednesday 29 January, the festivities will continue for 15 days in what is one of the biggest holidays of the year for many East and South-East Asian communities with 2025 representing the Year of the Snake, taken from the 12 different animals represented on the zodiac.

The brief story glances over the mythology of Nian, a fierce beast from ancient China. It's said that the beast hated loud noises, thus the reason the Lunar New Year is packed with firey explosions in the sky of multiple colors.
