After nearly two decades of delays, the federal government is finally requiring REAL IDs to board domestic flights.

The DMV lists the following documents needed to obtain a Real ID or Enhanced ID: Proof of identity, such as valid license, birth certificate or passport, with your full first, middle (if applicable) and last name. This name will be displayed on your card as required by federal law.

The state's Department of Motor Vehicles tells Axios they've issued more than 4 million Real IDs to date, which accounts for only 59% of all active licenses and IDs. That lower adoption rate could cause headaches for Virginia travelers this spring.

Technically, it’s not a requirement to update your state-issued driver's license to be compliant with Real ID. But if you don't, it might make your life more complicated.

Driver's licenses and IDs that are not Real ID-compliant will no longer get you through U.S. airport security once the law takes effect in a few weeks, but full enforcement may not start right away.
