Oakboro History. Oakboro traces its beginnings to the coming of the railroad in 1913. Before that time, C.C. Furr’s store and Ellis Thomas’ blacksmith shop were the only evidence of what would soon be a thriving downtown. The first passenger train came through town in late 1913 and stopped at the new Furr City depot.

You can walk through beautiful downtown full of classic cars on Main Street during a monthly Cruise-In or take in some history at the Oakboro Regional Museum of History or our railroad museum and replica train depot.

Oakboro Railroad Museum 128 Aquadale Road, Oakboro, NC. Permanent Exhibits include . . . Oakboro’s original Western Union telegraph key, jacks used for track maintenance, and other memorabilia from early days. A restored Norfolk Southern caboose is permanently situated on tracks on the museum site.

Oakboro Fire & Rescue serves and protects the citizens of Oakboro and Red Cross. Oakboro City Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1938 and Oakboro Rural Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1958.
