But who is Walter Van Beirendonck? Born in Belgium in the small town of Brecht, he is probably the most representative designer of the Antwerp Six (which also includes Dirk Van Saene, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester and Marine Yee), all of whom debuted in 1987 at the British Designers Show.

Walter Van Beirendonck first became known as one of the Antwerp Six, the group of Belgian designers, including Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester, who first showed at the London Designer Show in 1986.

As a boy at boarding school, Walter Van Beirendonck filled entire sketch books with his wonderful world of fantasy. When, years later, he discovered the course in fashion at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, he knew that he had found a channel through which he could express 'his world'.

What Van Beirendonck shows us is his vision of men's clothing for the next millennium. The collection is based on four thoroughly researched 'tailoring' schemes. The 'puzzle' section, for example, anticipates the varying needs of a wearer from the future.

Walter van Beirendonck was an original member of the Antwerp Six, a group of fashion designers coming out of the Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, in the early 1980s. Since the late 1980s, van Beirendonck has experimented with a variety of skirted garments. As well as minis, he has produced midis and maxis in plain and pleated styles. 'I have always found the skirt an intriguing garment', he explains.

Beirendonck broke through the borders of fashions and let himself be inspired by art, music, and literature, as well as by ethnic influences. The titles of his collections can be read like statements or messages. Revolution is more than simply a word for Beirendonck; it's an attitude.
